Opening Statement: “A touch of England brought to Maine” courtesy of your English hosts Mark and Judith Stephens. Our Historic Register Inn is located in Dexter, Maine which is just 20 minutes off I95 and 50 minutes drive to Bangor and the beautiful, scenic Moosehead Lake and Mount Katahdin region of Maine
More Details: The Inn is the former mansion home of State Governor Owen Brewster who was portrayed by Alan Alda in the award winning movie "The Aviator" that co-starred Leonardo DiCaprio as Howard Hughes. In Spring 2008 the Brewster Inn will be seen on TV right across the nation on HGTV “If Walls Could Talk”. Featuring classic 1930's elegance in a small town setting, the Brewster Inn offers a warm, relaxing and friendly atmosphere. Built in the 1930’s for Governor (later Senator) Ralph Owen Brewster by noted architect John Calvin Stevens, our Historic Register mansion features spacious common rooms and ten beautifully decorated, comfortable guest rooms and suites which range from expansive to cosy with each offering a distinct personality. Some feature fireplaces, original wood panelling, window seats and original tile bathrooms. Other rooms offer a lovely view of the gardens or a whirlpool bath for two. One handicapped accessible room is also available. All rooms have private baths, cable TV and air conditioning (in season) In warm weather, relax on our covered porches and enjoy over an acre of rose and perennial gardens complemented by an ornamental pond. In the winter, curl up in the living room window seat and watch the snow fall, or sit by the fire and indulge in novels and hot chocolate. Whether you are looking for a beautiful vacation filled with outdoor activities, a romantic getaway, quiet weekend of relaxation, wedding, winter sports, craft group, or corporate retreat location, Mark and Judith would love to look after you and treat you to some wonderful English hospitality. In the cooler months enjoy activities such as our winter town festival, moose watching, dog sledding, snowmobiling, skiing, ice fishing and hunting. In the warmer months enjoy the towns “Wild West” weekend, Autumn leaf colour, photography, public parks and beach, water sports, fishing, nature walks, cycling and more. Dexter offers a small town ambiance and is enviably located in The Maine Highlands between the Maine coast (approximately 40 miles to Belfast) and mountains and lakes (approximately 40 miles to Moosehead Lake and Squaw Mountain). Guests can take a picnic lunch and explore the countryside or walk to antique stores and local Wassookeag Lake. Dexter is also on the Maine snowmobile trails with the ITS trail running right past us. Explore the area and all of its quaint charm while staying with us at the Brewster Inn. Take a drive or bicycle ride and experience an abundance of scenic views from Lake Wassookeag to the beautiful countryside, forests and mountains. Visit one of our many local farms and orchards for apple and pumpkin picking and don't forget to take home some delicious Maine pure maple syrup.
